Teletubbies on Acid sighting or just the New Mascots for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London?

What a treat this is – the mascots for the 2012 Olympics in London, England. Their names are Wenlock, derived from the Shropshire town of Much Wenlock where the Wenlock Games in the mid-19th century inspired the modern Olympic movement and will be representing the Olympic games; and Mandeville, derived from Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire where the Stoke Mandeville Games was the widely recognized forerunner of the Paralympic movement and will be representing the Paralympic Games.

Sounds like there just might be a lot of merit behind the naming of these two mascots, now the face of the next Summer Olympics in 2012; however, something is amiss when you see what the brilliant British minds came up with – and remember, this went through several stages of approval!

UGLY and OFF-PUTTING: I really like British culture but I don't like these mascots at all. I doubt that most kids would want to cuddle with an ugly/scary thing like that. Also, with all of the public backlash against the big brother surveillance camera's around the UK, you would think that the all seeing eye of camera lens would not be a good choice for the face of an olympic mascot. It could be a marketing disaster…

Forward-thinking genius. As mascots go, unforgettable–and isn't that what any organization would want? As a proud Canadian, I hesitate to admit that I would not be able to pick out the Vancouver Olympics mascots in a group of stuffed toys. From your video clip, they are cute, but clearly forgettable.

Not so with Wenlock and Mandeville. Excellent branding London.

I have a mental image of a (likely) large committee, and I'm sure there were several rounds of such committees, all nodding in approval at these wonderful wonderful mascots. This is definitive proof that in a boardroom there are 5 people truly involved in the decision making and 32 "Yes"-men & women who just want to get the hell out of the room and the catatonic state they've fallen into, no matter what the cost, or legacy, in this case.

All that aside, I am 100% sure that these Salt & Pepper shaker-esque mascots came from the simplest of places. From the mind of just one of the kids of just one of those aforementioned 5 decision makers. Presumably the one that is either a) the most influential, or b) holds his liquor the best at "Corporate Meetings".

    Quatchi Rules!
