Opinions – Where are all the Olympic promotions in Gastown?

Gastown, the original downtown core of the City of Vancouver, named after a local barkeeper/steamboat captain “Gassy” Jack Deighton which was mostly destroyed leaving only two of its buildings standing in 1886 during the Great Vancouver Fire. In the 70′s Gastown served as the Haight Ashbury of the North, and today, Gastown is a hip, eclectic place, with a wide cross-section of people living in the small neighborhood.

Against that background of history, we wondered why Gastown did not feature more prominently in VANOC‘s plans for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. What are your thoughts?

The man I interviewed on the picture above has a name. His name is Matthew and he has had a tough life. He spent some time in Jail when he got out he married and I believe his wife died and then his best friend passed away. Matthew pays $450 dollars for a place downtown and he makes 6 to 7 hundred a month. His job is opening doors in the park aide for people and he makes 20 to 40 dollars a day on a real good day. I like Matthew he has endured a lot of pain but he is smart and has a decent sense of humor. He is a friend.

I'm planning to visit Vancouver again and when I do I will visit this place. Unfortunately I didn't know about it when I was last there.

Hi, I enjoyed my stroll through Gastown. It remindeed me a little of the meat packing district in NYC.

I think they call it character. I personally love to stroll through areas that have some history. My daughter lives in NYC and I know the meat packing area well. Every town has a gas town area and they need to be celebrated not ignored by the powers that be. Poor people are not lepers they are simply poor but the ones that I know are fascinating people . If Obama has his way a lot more people may find themselves in the Gas towns of North America. (Side Comment)
